Register for the Australian Organ Donor Register

Privacy Note

The establishment of the Australian Organ Donor Register (the Register) is authorised by a service arrangement under subsection 7(2) of the Medicare Australia Act 1973. The information you provide on this form will be used to record your consent to organ and tissue donation for transplantation (or your intent if aged 16 or 17 years) on the Donor Register. Provision of your Medicare number is voluntary and will be used to access your most recent enrolment details as held on the Medicare enrolment file. It will not be used for any other purpose. The information on the Donor Register will be available to authorised personnel in the organ and tissue donation network who have signed confidentiality agreements covering your personal information.

Medicare Card Number

It is not compulsory to supply your Medicare card number to register, however, to lodge your registration online, it is a business requirement of Medicare Australia that you supply this information.

Medicare Australia will use your Medicare card number to validate your registration.

Confirmation process

Registrations received online will be recorded as an intent registration. After registering your intent, you will receive a confirmation / consent letter to obtain your signature supporting legal consent (or objection) to organ and/or tissue donation for transplantation. When Medicare Australia receives your signed confirmation / consent letter, your intent registration will be converted to a consent registration.

Who can register on the Australian Organ Donor Register?

To ensure consent is legally valid, only people aged 18 years and over will be able to record their consent on the Donor Register. Registrations of intent will be accepted from people aged 16 and 17 years, but in these cases consent from families will still be needed for transplantation to take place.

Recording your decision on the Donor Register is voluntary, and individuals can limit their donation to only certain organs or tissue. The intending donor has complete choice over which organs and tissue they are prepared to donate. Donation can involve:

  • organs - which include kidneys, heart, lungs, liver and pancreas; and
  • tissue - which include heart valves, bone tissue, skin and eye tissue.
